While there are many people and things to be thankful for at this time of year and always, more people than ever appreciate their homes. Prior to the pandemic, 58% of homeowners said they felt emotionally attached to their homes, according to the Survey of the American Homeowner 2021 by Unison, but in 2021 that number rose to 70%.
Home provides a feeling of comfort in uncertain times and a place to celebrate life’s joyful moments. The Unison survey found that 91% of homeowners feel secure, stable and successful because they own a home and 83% felt their home kept them safe during the pandemic.
In the article “The Psychology of Home: Why Where You Live Means so Much” in The Atlantic, writer Julie Beck explored how homes are part of people’s self-definition and why people are so emotionally attached to where they live.
“Whether or not we are always aware of it, a home is a home because it blurs the line between the self and the surroundings and challenges the line we try to draw between who we are and where we are,” wrote Beck. “If home is where the heart is, then by its most literal definition, my home is wherever I am.”
In the America at Home Study in 2020, renters and homeowners were asked what home means to them. The highest percentage (89%) said it means a safe place, followed by family (84%), freedom (71%) and financial stability (63%).
The gratitude homeowners feel for their homes is enhanced when they know their home is protected. Instead of the burden of worrying about the hassle and expense of a repair, homeowners with a Cinch home warranty can feel thankful that they have a plan and a partner to help them deal with the unexpected.
