What's covered in a water heater warranty?

Water heaters can fail due to a burned-out heating element, a faulty thermostat, a worn thermocouple or gas control valve, or a pressure relief valve that won’t seal. Here’s how manufacturer warranties, extended warranties and home warranties typically compare.

Manufacturer warranty Extended warranty Home warranty
WHAT TYPICALLY GOES WRONG WITH THIS APPLIANCE
Parts Yes (6 years on many models) Covered by maker's parts warranty
Labor 1 year only Yes (per plan)
Diagnosis 1 year only (in-home service) Varies by plan
Heating Elements and Thermostats Limited (parts only after 1 year) Yes (labor, per plan)
Thermocouple and Gas Valve Limited (parts only after 1 year) Yes (labor, per plan)
Tankless Water Heaters Varies by maker Varies by plan Yes (including circulating pumps)
Coverage Maximum Varies by maker Varies by plan $1,000 per unit item
Wear and Tear Yes (per plan) Yes (covered failures)

Coverage varies by plan, model and condition. See sample contracts for full details.

A home warranty can be a more cost-efficient option if you want to protect a larger number of appliances and cover a wider range of potential issues. Instead of buying multiple individual protection plans, a home warranty consolidates coverage under a single service contract, often at a lower overall cost.

Home warranty vs. water heater warranty

Manufacturer warranties usually cover defects in a new water heater for a limited time, often 6 to 12 years on the tank and select parts. Labor is typically covered for a much shorter period, if at all, so installation and repair costs may fall on you. Extended warranties can lengthen that protection, but what they cover, from labor to normal wear and tear, varies by plan.

A home warranty offers broader protection. Instead of covering just your water heater, it can include other systems and appliances, like your plumbing, electrical and heating, under one plan. When a covered item breaks down from normal wear and tear, you submit a claim and pay a deductible. Subject to plan terms and conditions.

Why getting a home warranty for your water heater is smart

Water heaters rely on heating elements, thermostats, valves and burners that wear with regular use, and repairs can add up quickly. A home warranty helps reduce surprise expenses by covering eligible repairs due to normal wear and tear.

Instead of purchasing a standalone water heater warranty, you can help protect multiple systems and appliances at once. Cinch Home Services plans include water heaters along with heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems, plus refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, washers and dryers. You get access to pre-screened service providers and coverage for parts and labor on covered repairs. Subject to plan terms and conditions.

Covers all models — ongoing protection even after the manufacturer warranty ends

Even if your water heater is older or no longer covered by the manufacturer, a home warranty may still provide protection. Cinch Home Services plans help cover items regardless of age, make or model, and include coverage for unknown pre-existing conditions, whether your water heater is gas or electric. Subject to plan terms and conditions.

I am very happy with Cinch. Submitting a claim with Cinch was straightforward; they sent someone out quickly. The service was much faster compared to other home warranties I've previously used. Their quick and efficient service stands out. My granddaughter submitted the claim online, and they called me soon after to set up an appointment. The tech arrived the next day, which was very convenient.
I haven't had many claims, but the one experience I had was handled swiftly and met my expectations. I rate my experience with Cinch as fabulous. Their customer service is excellent, as are the services they provide.

Cinch takes care of the customer when there's a problem. The person they decide to use follows up and texts you every step. They have good customer service and always present themselves well. Whenever you have a question, they're always there to answer it. Recently, my water heater was leaking. It couldn't be fixed so it had to be replaced. If I know somebody's looking for a home warranty, I always tell them about Cinch Home Services. They're wonderful. You don't have to go out there and look for anyone to fix anything for you ‘cause they got your back.

My experience when submitting a claim was very seamless and effortless. The tech who came knew what the issue was with the heater immediately and he ordered the fan motor. They had it the next morning and he came and put it in the next morning. It was during the winter when I didn't have heat because of it and they were really fast and on the ball.
